Lately...

Sorry it’s been radio silence here in Tumblr-land. Lately I’ve been more of a Facebooker, I’ll admit it.

However, I wanted to let you all know about this lovely book by Jennifer McLagan called Odd Bits: How to Cook the Rest of the Animal (read an excerpt here). Patrik of PaleolithicDiet.com is running a little contest that I’m trying to be a winner of (to receive a copy of said book), and all I have to do is tell you what recipe I’d cook out of the book (and tweet about it as well).

It’s a tough call, but I think I’d go with “Wild Boar Shanks with Cranberries & Chocolate” because…honestly, it doesn’t sound scary AND it sounds yummy (hopefully it’s also an easy recipe, as I’ve been a lazy cook as of late). “Headcheese for the Unconvinced” is running a close second, however, because what IS headcheese, anyway, and yes, I’m unconvinced, LOL. Anyway, check out the book and PaleolithicDiet.com, won’t you?

P.S.: I already own McLagan’s Fat: An Appreciation of a Misunderstood Ingredient and Bones, so getting this book will complete my Offal Trifecta! Fingers crossed!

"My deepest impulses are optimistic, an attitude that seems to me as spiritually necessary and proper..."

“
My deepest impulses are optimistic, an attitude that seems to me as spiritually necessary and proper as it is intellectually suspect.

People need to understand that no one is playing marked cards; sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. Don’t expect to get anything back, don’t expect recognition for your efforts, don’t expect your genius to be discovered or your love to be understood. Complete the circle. Not out of pride, inability, or arrogance, but simply because whatever it is no longer fits in your life. Close the door, change the record, clean the house, get rid of the dust. Novices must learn to skim over matter if they want matter to stay at the exact level of the moment. Transparent things, through which the past shines!

Man-made objects, or natural ones, inert in themselves but much used by careless life (you are thinking, and quite rightly so, of a hillside stone over which a multitude of small animals have scurried in the course of incalculable seasons) are particularly difficult to keep in surface focus: novices fall through the surface, humming happily to themselves, and are soon reveling with childish abandon in the story of this stone, of that heath. I shall explain. A thin veneer of immediate reality is spread over natural and artificial matter, and whoever wishes to remain in the now, with the now, on the now, should please not break its tension film. Otherwise the inexperienced miracle-worker will find himself no longer walking on water but descending upright among staring fish.
”

- Vladimir Nabokov - Transparent Things, 1972 (via billellsworth)

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship,..."

“A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.
